Film Analysis: Elf


Ordinary World:
Buddy the Elf lives in the North Pole and has been raised by elves all his life. He believes he is a Christmas elf.

Call to Adventure:
Buddy finds out he is not an elf and that his real father lives in New York City. Buddy now goes on a journey to reunite with his real life.
Refusal of the call:
Buddy talks to the snowman, he is afraid to leave.
Meeting the Mentor:
Buddy talks with Santa Claus. Santa gives him advice and guidance to his father. He also tells buddy that his father is on the naughty list.

Crossing the threshold:
Buddy leaves the North Pole and travels until he reaches New York.

Tests, Allies, Enemies:
Buddy learns the ways of New York City. He eats gum, gets hit by cars, finds the worlds best cup of coffee, finds his dad, meets a girl and has a run in with a fake Santa.
Approach to the inmost cave:
Buddy realizes he is in love and happy. He runs to go tell his dad.
The ordeal:
Buddy insults an important writer, putting his dad's job in jeopardy. His dad tells him to leave and get out of his life. Buddy questions his motives and feels he does not belong.

Reward:
Buddy's father realizes his family is more important than his job. He goes out to find Buddy. Their family is united in a cause and Jovie realizes she loves Buddy too.
The road back:
Micheal and his dad see Buddy on TV and know where to find him and how to get him home. When they find him they realize he is an elf.
The Resurrection:
Upon finding Santa, Buddy and his family help fix his sleigh and deliver Christmas spirit to everyone in New York. Buddy saves Christmas.
Return with the Elixir:

Buddy becomes a best selling children's author, marries his dream girl (Jovie), has a baby, visits the North Pole often and lives happily ever after.
